A Sardinian yard that went to sea

Pedra Rubja Technologies is a marine technology company in Assemini, near Cagliari. It builds composite structures for boats and a sail drone for the sea in front of it.

The story

From carbon parts to a hull that sails alone

The name is the red rock of southern Sardinia. The company started as a composites workshop, and the drone came from the customers' questions.

The yard in Macchiareddu was built for racing composites: carbon structures, moulds, repairs for yachts and teams that cannot afford weight or delay. The processes are those of the top of the sport.

The drone came later, from a simple observation. Public bodies, research stations and energy operators around Sardinia kept asking for data from the sea, and kept paying for ships by the hour to get it. A sailing hull that stays out for a season answers the same question at a different cost.

Today the company runs both. The yard pays for the present, the drone is the plan. The first Maistrale hull is being built in the same hangar, with the same people.

Sardinia

Why the base is here

Cagliari sits in the middle of the western basin. Sicily is a day away, the Balearics two, the Tyrrhenian and the Sardinian channel are at the door.

The Sardinian coast offers every sea the drone will meet: shallow protected areas, open water with a long fetch, straits with traffic, and the deep basin south of the island.

The island also hosts the people the drone works for. Marine protected areas, the regional environmental agency, research stations, port authorities, and a military presence on the coast.
